After attending quite a number of media event, I figured out that at some press event, you can actually “borrow” flash from other photographer’s DSLR. And I don’t mean physically borrow a flash from them. I mean make use of their DSLR’s flash on your photo.
Here is a photo I’ve taken at a recent media event.
The lighting is rather dim. I decided against turning on the flash because I know the flash on my point and shoot camera isn’t able to go that far. But I can still take bright photos with my point and shoot. I just need to wait for the right moment. Here is the trick.
When someone is on stage making an announcement/speech, the photographers will usually try to take all the photos they need within the first few minutes. This is your only chance of “borrowing” their flash. Look around for a photographer who is getting ready to take a photograph. For most case, the photographer will aim and wait till the speaker raise his/her head and look at the audience before pressing the shutter. You should also take aim, half press your point and shoot camera so that it focus on the speaker. Once you see the speaker raise his/her head, press the shutter. You should be able to take a photo at roughly the same time as the photographer, making use of his/her DSLR’s flash.
With a little of practice, you should be able to get bright photos like this.
Nice right? DSLR’s flash to looks good when used on point and shoot.

I did that too when I was traveling in Guangdong. Only that, I didn’t think of waiting for the speaker to look up. Instead, I focused my camera on the speaker while my eye was on the other photographer. The moment I see him about to click, I also click, haha!
