On Siew Kum Hong not appointed as NMP for second term
I was kinda surprised and disappointed when I saw Siew Kum Hong tweet about not being reappointed as NMP. I always thought that he would be reappointed as NMP because of his outstanding contribution in parliament during the first term. I personally feel that he is the best NMP in this term and if he doesn’t get reappointment, nobody else would. And I was right, nobody was reappointed for another term.
It’s a great lost for all Singaporean. Siew Kum Hong provided a very strong alternative voice in the parliament. A voice that we desperately need in a parliament filled with MP from the ruling party. Some may say that NMP makes no differences in the parliament but I bet to differ. They raise question and make us look at things from a different angle.
It was reported that Siew Kum Hong posted 134 speeches and question (Written and Oral) in Parliament between Jan 2007 to Mar 2009. And one of the speeches that is closest to my heart is the “Parliamentary Elections” speech 27 August 2008. He spoke about the survey finding by TOC that majority of the residents in Jurong GRC wanted a by election after the death of MP Dr Ong Chit Chung.
Siew Kum Hong spoke for the residents of Jurong GRC, even though we are represented by 4 MP in the parliament. The 4 MP of Jurong GRC choose to ignore the resident’s wishes and spoke against a by election in Jurong GRC. Although we didn’t get a by election in the end, it showed us the quality of the 4 MP representing Jurong GRC.
Despite not being reappointed as NMP, I hope Mr Siew would continue his contribution to Singapore. Many people have urged him to take part in the next election. Personally, I also wish that he would. We need more people like him inside the parliament.
