Hackerspace

I guess by now most of you would have heard of Hackerspace Singapore. It is hard for me to describe what exactly is a Hackerspace. According to the wikipedia, a hackerspace is a place where people with common interests, usually in science, technology, or digital or electronic art can meet, socialise and collaborate. Nothing much associated to the white hackers as mentioned in the Straits Times article sometime back.

When I first heard about the place from Justin, I was pretty excited about its potential. But there is only one thing that was holding me back, the membership fees. It was rather expensive. I was hoping that it could be free. But it’s impossible to run a place like that without collecting membership fee. And they are not making any profit out of this. All money collected will be channel back to Hackerspace.

But I changed my mind after visiting Hackerspace after BarCampSingapore 4. I love the location. I love the facilities. And most important, I love the synergy ongoing at hackerspace. I love the community spirit happening there.

And so, I became a member of Hackerspace.

There are quite a number of other Hackerspace around the world. And its an interesting community. Just last weekend, the founder of Noisebridge (a hackerspace in San Francisco) came down to Singapore to visit us.

Do pop by Hackerspace if you are free. Check out the cool place and if you are interested, sign up as member too. :)
