Motorola Milestone now exclusive to Starhub in Singapore

OK, I know I’m late with this news. But in case you haven’t heard about it, the Motorola Milestone (aka Droid) has arrived in Singapore. What caught me by surprise is that the Milestone is exclusive to Starhub in Singapore. Yeap, you heard me right. Exclusive to Starhub only.

Interestingly, 2 months ago when SingTel got exclusive to MOTOBLUR and Dext, Motorola/SingTel spokesperson said that they had no plans to bring the Milestone to Singapore yet. And if they do bring the Milestone to Singapore, SingTel would have the opportunity to carry it. I guess a lot of things has changed over the 2 months.

I haven’t got the chance to try the Motorola Milestone yet. But so far, I’ve been hearing mostly positive reviews about the Motorola Droid (the CDMA version of Milestone). So I guess we can expect similar reviews from the Milestone. Another exciting news is that the Milestone comes with MotoNav which provide turn by turn navigation in Singapore. What is unclear from the Starhub press release is whether the MotoNav is a 30 days trial version or lifetime license. Any Starhub Milestone users able to verify this?

So if you are looking for a high end Android phone with contract, the Motorola Milestone is currently your only option. (Until the HTC Legend comes to Singapore. *cough*SOON*cough*) I must say that the Motorola Milestone pricing from Starhub is very attractive.

Oh, in case you are wondering, the Motorola Milestone sold in Singapore is not locked. (IDA prohibits Telcos from locking phone) Which means you can buy the Milestone from Starhub and use it with SIM card from other Telcos.

    Absurdities
    1. The MotoNav is a 60-day trial only. Need to purchase an activation code after 60 days (from the website, the activation code for Europe maps cost 99 EUROs!!!)
    2. Motorola’s definition of lifetime licence that you pay with 99 EUROs is two years!!!
    3. Somehow the Milestone model sold in Singapore disables the turn-by-turn voice navigation features of Google Maps (the free GPS nav alternative). I smell a fish here…

Sad…I got to know all these AFTER I bought the phone… :(

  • dk says:

Step: The Google Map turn by turn navigation is only available in US for now. Although I heard got people managed to crack it and get it available worldwide. :)

  • cz says:

Does Milestone have/ links to MotoBlurr?

  • dk says:

cz: The Motorola Milestone does not have MOTOBLUR.

  • Khairul says:

I am running Google Navigator on my Milestone. Yes, in Singapore. You have to be resourceful and find it ;) Just Google or Torrent.

MOTOBLUR is useless, I used it on the DEXT and it only sucks battery life.

  • FiKo says:

Khairul: Ur Google Navigator has the voice turn by turn instructions? I only manage to get navigation using the google maps but it is silent. No voice giving instructions.

  • Khairul says:

FiKo: Voice is activated SOMETIMES. You need to download a text to speech converter. Anyway the road names are not properly indexed for Singapore, that’s why it hasn’t reached our shores yet.

In any case, even w/o the voice, it is much more useful because of Google’s search :)

How can i text chinese sms in the motorola milestone.

Milestone software highly unstable – DO NOT BUY

Pro: Nice Gmail, Google Map and Youtube integration

Con: Software highly unstable. Reboot suddenly by itself. Alarm Clock and Music Player not working properly, Hang often, Overheat, Short battery life.

Buy the Milestone with Android 2.1 software only if you are a techie and like to debug unstable software yourself.

You can join the Motorola User Forum to help Motorola to debug their software at https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/170142#170142.

Just read the griefs express by so many buyers of Motorola Milestones on its forum.

As the boot directory is locked by Motorola – even if you can get hold of the latest Android 2.2 software you are unable to fix the problem yourself as Motorola has locked it.
