If you do a Google on Prof Stephen Hawking, you will notice that lots of news outlet and blogs talking about his warning against making contact with aliens.

In a series for the Discovery Channel the renowned astrophysicist said it was “perfectly rational” to assume intelligent life exists elsewhere.

But he warned that aliens might simply raid Earth for resources, then move on.

“If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans,” he said. Prof Hawking thinks that, rather than actively trying to communicate with extra-terrestrials, humans should do everything possible to avoid contact.

He explained: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet.”

You see, Prof Stephen Hawking is making a huge assumption here. He is assuming that the Alien civilization are nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach. He assume that earth has the resource that they need. He assume that they have the capabilities send an invasion army to earth and wage war against human. He assume that their weapons has effect on humans. He assume that they are not peace loving.

That is a lot of assumption here. I’m sure Prof Stephen Hawking has lots of credential. But I can’t help but wonder why is everyone publishing his huge assumption which has no proof at all.

What if the Alien civilization that we make contact with is a peace loving one. What if they are advance in science and decide to share their technology with us? What if they want to trade with us? We might gain a lot from making contact with them.

Or what if Earth is totally not suitable for that Alien civilization to live in? What if they don’t need the type of resources found on earth? Or what if they are not short of resources to begin with? Being advance in Science does not means they have finished up their resource in their home planet and are roaming the universe in search of more resource. What if they have advance technology on renewable resource? Something they can share with us when we make contact.

Just because humans are not peace loving doesn’t mean the advance Alien civilization out there is war like. Maybe they don’t even have the concept of fighting. Maybe they are just advance in space exploration but not in weaponry? Who knows, they might still be using sword and spear despite having the technology to travel in light speed.

Or maybe they are too small in size (perhaps the size of ants) and can’t possibly fight against us.

Wait….. I’m also making a lot of huge assumption here. But the only difference is that I don’t have a PHD and none of the news agencies will bother with what I’m crapping here.

Damn, why did I study IT? I should be a astrophysicist instead.
