Samsung USB-powered monitor
I found myself talking non-stop about this interesting monitor by Samsung since reading about it on Cnet.
Does this reminds you of the Samsung Lapfit Display?
At first, it doesn’t seems anything amazing. It’s just a monitor that runs on USB. But imagine how your desk is going to look like with this. Close your eyes and imagine this USB powered 18.5 inch monitor on your desk. No power cable, no VGA cable. Just one USB. You come back home with your laptop, plug the monitor’s USB cable, laptop power brick, keyboard and mouse to your laptop and you have a desktop. Isn’t that cool?
I’m not sure about the details yet, but if the monitor has a USB hub, that will be even more amazing. You can just plug your keyboard and mouse to the USB hub and all you need is to connect that one USB cable to your laptop and you are ready to go.
You might be wondering how did Samsung managed to make a 18.5 inch monitor powered by USB. They did it by using AMOLED. Yeap, that the beautiful display you find on many Samsung phones. The only drawback is that the screen last 30,000 hours, compared with 50,000 for standard LCD panels. I guess its give and take.
There is no mention of pricing yet. It will be available some where in 2011.

“The only drawback is that the screen last 30,000 hours”
Just to put it into perspective: Even if you use it 12 hours a day, 365 days a year, that monitor will last for almost 7 years.

Wow displays normally are the biggest energy guzzlers. This sounds pretty cool.

I also want one, but things either never arrive in Malaysia at all, or they arrive after even third world African countries don’t want them.
what?! USBs are only 5volts and current limited at 500mA and they managed to power up a screen?
Hun Boon: True. But it is still shorter than your average LCD monitor
