Corrinne May – Song for Singapore

Submitted by on July 8, 2010 – 11:30 AM5 Comments | 44 views

I was at Changi Airport Terminal 2 waiting to board a plane to KL when the television at a distance is playing this song. I couldn’t hear the song clearly, but from the voice and the music style, I knew straight away that it’s a song by Corrinne May. And from the TV screen, I can tell that it’s the NDP Theme Song.

Although I couldn’t hear the song clearly at the airport, I knew it is going to be a great song. I mean, it’s Corrinne May. How could it be not great?

For the uninitiated, Corrinne May is a local singer and song writer based in Los Angeles. She has released 4 albums, Fly Away (2001), Safe in a Crazy World (2005), The Gift (2006) and Beautiful Seed (2007). I have all her albums except The Gift.

For the longest time, I’ve been wondering why hasn’t Corrinne May been invited to sing at National Day Parade. I’m glad that she is singing the NDP 2010 Theme song. This could be the best NDP Theme song after Home by Kit Chan.

Below is the lyrics for those who wanna sing along. Been playing this song on repeat at my hotel room. Loving it!!!

Corrinne May – Song For Singapore

It’s a brand new day, a brand new story
I remember the way it used to be
We’ve come so far.
You’re my history, you’re my beginning
In all I’ve done
I’ve been nurtured in your arms
And you’ve carried me this far

I want to sing,
sing a song for Singapore
with every generation
there’s more to be grateful for
So come and sing
sing a song for Singapore
You’re my brother, you’re my sister,
I’m thankful for my Singapore
My Singapore, my Singapore.

Come together everybody
Fly the flag and share our story
Live our wildest dreams
Celebrate the red and white
The moon and stars in harmony unite
Let every colour every heart

Come on and sing,
sing a song for Singapore
with every generation
there’s more to be grateful for
So come and sing
sing a song for Singapore
You’re my brother, you’re my sister,
I’m thankful for my Singapore
My Singapore, my Singapore

We’ve had our ups and downs
Sometimes the best things are taken for granted
You’re my family, you’re my home.

When I first heard the song, I was like “wow, u mean this is really a national day song?” It’s classy and doesn’t yet go down to a ‘cheesy’ level when expousing the patriotic theme of being a Singaporean.

I’m not saying the previous National Day Singapore songs weren’t good but I would rank this to be my favourite of all time :)

    Well done, Corrine May!!!

Many national day songs I hv heard throughout my life, nvr earn any tears from me..
However, this “Corrinne May – Song for Singapore” stunted me when I 1st heard it on TV…. I cried..
Why.. I remembered my childhood times..
I even recorded my singing together with Corrinne May “Song for Singapore” in my Handphone.. I hear it every morning in MRT.. (haha.. guess what is MRT in Spore).
Once again Corrinne May, I am proud of U.
