Yellow Ribbon Community Art Exhibition
I attended an art exhibition last Friday evening. You must be wondering since when did I start becoming arty farty and learn to appreciate art. Well, this is no ordinary art exhibition. There is no famous artist. You most likely never heard of them before. It is the Yellow Ribbon Community Art Exhibition by the Yellow Ribbon Project.
The Yellow Ribbon Community Art Exhibition provides a platform for inmates and ex-offenders to express their hopes and aspirations through art, showcase their artistic talents, foster closer family relationships and reach out to the community. The focus this year is on how the CARE Network, through the Yellow Ribbon Project, has given them the opportunity to RestART their lives. Hence, the creative theme revolves around REsilience, Self-Awareness, Transformation, Adaptability and Reintegration into The community.
And although the artwork are not done by professional artist, some of them are pretty good. Personally, I’m impressed by the quality of the artworks. I was told that they engaged professional artist to train the inmates. I think this is a good program. The inmates get to pick up a new skill while serving their time. If they are interested, they might be able to make a living as a artist when they are release.
There’s quite a number of artwork on display. I’m posting some of my personal favorite.
Life Dance by Sidek
A Natural Whisper by 來成
Paradise of Darkness by Chun Kiat
Adaptation Woes by I.M
Reunite by Reunite
You can also view these artwork (with the artist’s comments) and many more at Yellow Ribbon Project . If you are interested in the artwork, you can adopt them. All proceeding will go back to the Yellow Ribbon Project where they will organize courses and activities to help inmate RestART their lives.
Here is the sad part. These artwork will most likely be kept in the storage after this exhibition. So this could be the last time anyone get to see them in public. So if you are into art, head down to the Singapore Art Museum soon.

What do the exoffenders get out of this?
Will they be even able to get a job?
Can they sell their art? (another question is — will Singaporeans buy from an “unknown artist”)
It feels like just telling me that some people can paint, and some have been to jail.
Good art is good art, no matter where it is from, and I don’t think branding it as “Yellow Ribbon Art” helps at all.

Robin: It’s not just about finding work. Art is also part of the rehabilitation program. It is not necessary that all of them become artist after they are release. Just like not all IT grads works in the IT sector.
