Nokia to release Windows Phone 7 phone

I still remember late last year when Nokia Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Markets unit, Niklas Savander replied on Twitter saying that Nokia will not switch to Windows Phone 7 or Android. He believes that Symbian and MeeGo will continue to add value to consumers.

Things changed quite a bit over 4 months. Nokia announced last Friday that it will adopt Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 as its main platform on smart phones. It wasn’t really a surprised. After all, the new Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop, was from Microsoft. And we all know something is brewing when Nokia announced that it will have a press conference last Friday with Microsoft. The leaked “Burning Platform” memo from Elop further confirms that Nokia is going to make a drastic platform change.

And it’s not just a simple Nokia releasing Windows Phone 7 phone deal. The partnership is going to be quite comprehensive. Windows Phone 7 will become Nokia’s principal smartphone operating system. Nokia will help Microsoft develop it and ensure a broad range of phones using WP7 are available globally. Nokia will use Microsoft’s online services like Bing, Bing Maps, AdCentre etc etc. Nokia will bring it’s existing carrier billing agreement to Windows Phone 7.

In short, Microsoft and Nokia are building an entire ecosystem. The agreement is still at the draft stage. I guess it will take a while before we get to see a Nokia Windows Phone 7 phone. But I guess Nokia will be able to roll it out faster than their MeeGo phone.

This move also means the beginning of the slow gradual end of Symbian and MeeGo. Nokia will slowly phrase out Symbian in favor of Windows Phone 7 although Nokia expects to ship 150 million more Symbian phones in the meantime. Nokia will also ship one MeeGo smartphone later this year. This move has angered many Nokia employees. After the announcement, many of them decided to walk out in protest. Reports say that many of the protestors work on the Symbian platform.

If you ask me, I think switching to Windows Phone 7 is a great move. Symbian is lagging behind the smartphone OS wars. It used to be a great mobile OS in the past. But it didn’t develop fast enough to meets the current needs of consumers. The only way to revive Symbian is to rewrite the entire OS just like what Microsoft did to Windows Mobile. But that is provided that they can do it fast enough. MeeGo could have saved Nokia if they could roll it out last year. But they didn’t. We need to wait till maybe end of the year before we get to see a MeeGo phone. That’s too late for Nokia.

I think this is the best option/route for Nokia. If switching to Windows Phone 7 can’t save Nokia from the burning platform, then I guess nothing will. I’m kinda looking forward to the first Nokia Windows Phone 7 phone. Let’s hope it won’t take too long.

PS: One of my Tech prediction for 2011 came true. “Nokia release smartphone running either Windows Phone 7 or Android”

Best of Super Bowl 2011 advertisements

I love the advertisements from Super Bowl. In fact, that’s the only thing I look forward to every Super Bowl.

Here are some of my favorite from Super Bowl 2011.

Sony Ericsson – Android is ready to play

This is my favorite advertisement from Super Bowl 2011. It’s pretty dark and might not be suitable for the younger kids. But it did make a great impression and bring the message across in a very creative way.

Now, my thumbs are ready. Where’s there Xperia Play?

Audi – Release the Hounds

I love this advertisement. I was laughing at the “Hit them with the Kenny G” phrase. They should call this advertisement “Hit them with the Kenny G” instead or “Release the hounds”.

Check out their advertisement teaser.

Motorola – Empower the People

A pretty nice advertisement referencing the famous 1948 advertisement by Apple. But somehow I felt the hype before this advertisement is far greater than the ad itself. And perhaps someone should tell the guy that there’s no happiness between an Android Fan Boy and an Apple Fan Girl. Go find someone else.

Chrysler – Born Of Fire

The Loose Yourself soundtrack by Eminem nailed it.

Volkswagen – The Force

Love this advertisement. Heartwarming and cute. You can’t go wrong with Star Wars reference. But then, Dads around the world should know that they can do similar things with most car. It doesn’t need to be just Volkswagen Passat.

Chevrolet – Status

Oooo…. this is a cool feature. Having Facebook news feed read out to you while driving. But that’s provided you only have that gal in your Facebook Friends list. Else you will most likely listen to 5 or 6 other friends’ status update before the system reads out the only status update that you want to check.

Maybe parking the car at the side of the road and whip out your iPhone would be a better idea if you really can’t wait.

Bridgestone – Carma

A good way to showcase their product. And the beaver is cute lah.

Kia – One Epic Ride

Interesting concept.

Coca-Cola – Border

Funny to see the trouble 2 soldier go thru in order to pass a bottle of Coke across the border. Come on. Nobody is watching.

Bud Light – Hack Job

If only all the home improvements are so easy.

MINI – Cram It in the Boot

Nice reference to “The price is right”.

SNICKERS – Logging

Straight to the point. You are not you when you are hungry.

Lipton Brisk – Eminem

Another advertisement by Eminem. Love the phrase “No, we can’t change the name to Eminem. Shut up and drink it”

DORITOS – House Sitting

Super lame but funny.

Check out the rest Super Bowl 2011 advertisements here. Which is your favorite?

Just some numbers

Warning: I’m using this entry to log down some figures so that I can visit them again when I hit my 4000th blog entry.

I’ve shared my webstats on my 1000th and 2000th post. Maybe I should carry on the tradition and do the same since this is my 3000th blog entry.

Here’s my recent referrer traffic that I got from Google Analytics for the past month.

If you compare my current referrer traffic to the referrer traffic on my 2000th post, you will notice a huge change. I’m getting a huge percentage of referrers from Google. This might not be a good news cause it means lesser and lesser websites are referring to my blog. Interesting to note that Facebook and Twitter are giving almost the same amount of referrers. I was actually expecting Twitter to bring more referrers.

I always use Extreme Tracking to see my daily, weekly and monthly visitors number.

Actually the visitorship dropped a bit compared to few months ago. You can see that it started declining since September last year. Need to do something about it.

Do people still use Technorati nowaday? Anyway, my Technorati Authority now is 128. Slight improvement. But not as good as my 1000th post. I think they changed their algorithm too.

My current page rank is 5. Worldwide Alexa Traffic Rank is 647,257. Singapore Alexa Traffic Rank is 6,359.

OK, that’s all. Let’s see how much changed on the 4000th blog entry. Now back to my usual blog entries.

My 2999th post

Wow, what a journey. Didn’t expect that I would blog for so long. And I couldn’t have done it without the support from all my readers, companies and PR agencies. Thank you!

A lot of things have changed since my first post. If you read my first blog entry, you will know that this isn’t my first blog. I have several blogs before this but I shut them down due to various reasons. And I’ve moved from blogspot to this personal domain name. And did I tell you that I love this domain a lot? :)

My blogging style changed a lot over the years. Like a lot of new bloggers, this blog started as a personal diary type of blog. Always full of complaints. Well, I still complain nowadays but not so much. I think every blogger’s style will evolve over time. Nowadays, I talk more about things that interest me and things that I feel will be useful to my readers.

Every once in a while, someone will ask me why do I blog. Reason is very simple. I love tech stuff. And blogging give me access to gadgets and tech news directly from the company or their agencies. I get to experience things first hand. I get to see things others don’t get to see. I get to play with gadgets before it is launched. I get to talk to company executives and understand what’s the reason behind certain decisions.

It is my passion for tech stuff that drives me to blog (almost) everyday. And which is also the reason why I don’t do advertisements on my blog. I’m already over-paid with all the experience that I’m getting.

And I’m loving it. Cheers!

Should Barbie take Ken back?

Mattel recently launched a social media campaign asking the Internet to help Ken win back Barbie. Yes, in case you still don’t know, the couple broke up on Valentine’s Day back in 2004.

Before I carry on, let me say that the person at Mattel who came up with that stupid idea back in 2004 deserves a kick in the ass. Why the F do you want to break up a toy couple that little girls play with? Now tell me, how do parents around the world explain the concept of ex-boyfriend/ex-girlfriend to their 7 year old daughter?

Good thing they aren’t married. Else I don’t know how parents are going to explain the concept of divorce and alimony.

Anyway, Mattel is now asking people to “help” Barbie decide by voting online. The campaign also make use of Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare to help spread the message. Both Barbie and Ken have their own Twitter account.

Mattel has also partnered up with Magnolia Bakery in Los Angeles and New York City to create a special cupcake that will only be sold up to Valentine’s Day. It is said that Ken specially designed the dessert for Barbie at her favorite bakery.

Looks like we will know the outcome this coming Valentine’s Day.

If Barbie and Ken are real people, I would say heck care what your friends say. Throw away the polls and just follow your heart. Don’t listen to your friends. They aren’t the one in the relationship. How can they give good advice? This should be between the 2 of you. Listen to your heart.

But then since Barbie and Ken are toy dolls and their love story is written by people from Mattel, I say EVERYONE go to the website and vote YES for Barbie to take Ken back as boyfriend. Please…. I don’t want to think about how to explain to my future daughter the concept of ex-bf/ex-gf when she receive her first Barbie and Ken dolls.

And Mattel, if you are reading this, PLEASE, kick that fellow’s ass hard.
