Did anyone online slander Cynthia Phua?

Submitted by on May 4, 2011 – 2:00 PM10 Comments | 130 views

Wow, my blood pressure went up a few notches when I read this from Aljunied GRC Facebook page.

Response to Online Slander that Aljunied PAP team is not compassionate

We wish to clarify on the slander that has been viralling online, particularly on the accusation that we had pressed charges on a helpless, mentally handicapped resident who came to MPS in Serangoon North and slammed a chair on the door.

We were wrongly accused that not only that we had not been compassionate, also that we had pressed charges against the poor boy. We didn’t press charges. The mother and son have been coming to MPS regularly and we had been helping them to get financial aids. We had continued to help after the incident and we will continue doing so.

We would like to urge residents and grassroots leaders to look out for those who require assistance but are hesitating to come forward to ask for help.

Firstly, the news report was published on TNP and AsiaOne. The online community is merely reminding everyone that this event happened 2 years ago. Is that considered slander?

Slander is a very strong word. We know if you slander someone in Singapore, you can get sued. Perhaps I won’t be so pissed off if the Facebook entry use the word “misunderstanding” instead of “slander”.

Chair don’t fly for no reason. We don’t know what exactly happen during the Meet the People Session. But we do know that the youth is agitated after meeting Cynthia Phua. Could she explain what causes the youth to react this way?

And did Cynthia Phua made a police report? Did she told TNP that she did not accept the apology from the mother and the youth? If she did, then aren’t we right to say that she lack compassion and empathy? Nobody was harmed in the process. The youth has low IQ. As a MP, she should be more gracious and accept the apology. But she didn’t.

I don’t care if the charges were dropped later or not. The fact that she did not accept the apology at first already made me lose respect for her.

It’s disappointing to see that posting on Aljunied GRC Facebook page. Yesterday, we saw a video of George Yeo saying he wants to reach out to young Singaporean. The very next day, we see his team mate saying the online community is slandering her.

Sigh.

Slander is “oral communication of false statements injurious to a person’s reputation”. What we have here is libel, which is a “written act of defamation”. You would think PAP MP’s would be more familiar with these terms than the rest of us.

  • KC says:

PAP don’t know difference between slander and libel, Shanmugam law fail.

“The fact that she did not accept the apology at first already made me lose respect for her.”

So right. Compassion must include a willingness to forgive too.

I thought it more correct to say it was the other way round.

It’s not clear if the charges have been dropped. As Mr Wang pointed out, only the police and the AGC can press charges against people. So it is trivially true that Cynthia Phua cannot press charges. That doesn’t mean that the charges will be dropped. If Phua tells the AGC that she no longer wishes to pursue the case, then the latter might decide to drop the case. But Phua has given no indication if she intends to tell the AGC that.

Naz, KC: It is not even libel. We are merely mentioning a news article.

    Eddc: Come on. Be nice.
