Vote for the future of Singapore

Submitted by on May 6, 2011 – 3:30 PM4 Comments | 22 views

I thought 9 days of campaigning for elections is too short. I might be wrong. Over the past few days, both PAP and the Oppositions covered tons of topic concerning Singapore, Singaporeans and the future. We seen amazing change in tone from the PAP. We also see more creditable opposition candidates this time.

The election on 7th May is not just about ministerial pay, housing cost, influx of foreigners, rising cost of living, flooding, HDB upgrading etc etc…. It is also about the future of Singapore. It’s for our children. During the start of the election period, MM Lee told us not to rock Singapore’s foundations. I respectfully disagree with him. We are not rocking the foundations. We are strengthening the foundations so that our children can live in a democratic country.

Thanks to MM Lee and the founding fathers of independent Singapore, we managed to achieve what we have now. The current system may work well during the early stages of Singapore independence. But it is clear that this system is not good enough for current Singapore. Time has changed. We need to change. And we must change now while we still can.

Singapore need more alternative voices in the Parliament. And I not talking about those NCMP and NMP type of voices. I’m talking about voices from elected opposition parties who has voting rights in Parliament. I respect the contributions from all the NCMP and NMP. But it is useless to talk all day long about how bad a new Bill is when the ruling party refuses to listen. Singapore can do nothing but let them have it their way because the ruling party holds more than 2/3 majority in Parliament. Things need to change. The opposition should be able to block Bills that are not good for the future of Singapore.

It always pisses me off whenever I see the way PAP treats elected opposition Member of Parliament and those living in opposition constituencies. Everyone should read about the makeshift cubicle used by Mr Chiam See Tong for his Potong Pasir Meet the People session. Ask yourself, why is it that opposition constituencies are treated like second class citizen? Are they any lesser Singaporeans compared to you and I? No! So why is it that PAP Member of Parliament gets to conduct their Meet the People session in the comfort of an Aircon room while opposition MP need to do it at a makeshift cubicle?

People always say that if we vote for the opposition, there will be no upgrading. Maybe. But have they asked themselves, why is it that opposition constituencies get second class treatments? Why aren’t they allowed upgrading? Whose money is used to pay for the upgrading? Do people living in opposition constituencies pay less taxes? Do they not serve national service? Are they exempted from defending Singapore when war come? Why is it that the ruling party have the rights to control who gets upgrading and who doesn’t? Who gave them the power to do so? Why are Singaporeans penalized for exercising their democratic rights?

I’m worried for the future of Singapore. What if one day the future leaders of the ruling party become corrupted or incompetent? Will our children have the power to vote them out of the Parliament and replace them with a decent opposition? Will there be a decent opposition that is able to take over? I’m worried if we don’t do something now, our children and their children will blame our generation for not building a strong foundation for them. They will blame us for giving the ruling party so much power that it’s impossible to remove them from power if they ever turn bad.

Build a strong foundation for a democratic Singapore. Create a political landscape where a political party stay in power because they serve the nation best. Not because they can control your estate’s upgrading or change the electoral boundaries. Remove the rights for any political party to control the upgrading. Balance the power in Singapore political landscape. A good political party do not need to use those despicable tactics to stay in power. They just need to serve Singaporeans best.

My dear fellow Singaporeans, the elections tomorrow is not for us. It’s for our children. It’s for the future of Singapore. We need to stop the ruling party from putting up more obstacles to prevent Singaporeans to choose the people they want to represent them in parliament. Singaporeans should be the one who place obstacles in front of political parties so that we can sieve out the best to serve the nation. The power should be in the peoples’ hands.

PM Lee wants young Singaporeans to build a better nation than what the older generations had achieved for us. Tomorrow will be the day we start to a build a better nation. Tomorrow we will lay the foundation to building a democratic Singapore. Tomorrow will be a day forever remember in the History of Singapore.

We will not see the changes immediately after tomorrow’s elections. But if you vote wisely, tomorrow will mark the day that Singapore start moving towards a true democratic country. Give our children the rights to choose their representative in Parliament without being penalized by the ruling party.

My dear fellow Singaporeans, please vote wisely on 7th May. For the future of Singapore. For our children. And the future generation of Singapore. Majulah Singapura!

We, the citizens of Singapore,
pledge ourselves as one united people,
regardless of race, language or religion,
to build a democratic society
based on justice and equality
so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and
progress for our nation.

Yes, tomorrow will be the “now-or-never” day, because by the time the next elections come by, our voice will be drowned out by the masses of new citizens.

Do not pretend that by closing your eyes and ears, the problems will go away or someone will ultimately solve them for you. It will only exacerbate the problems that your children will come to bear in future.

The civil service advocates the practice of obtaining at least two quotes from different vendors even for nominal purchases, so why can’t we have more than one voice in the Parliament which addresses even more important issues?

Think about this when you vote tomorrow

Looks like the recital of the Pledge will be a permanent feature of opposition rallies from now on.

9 days of campaigning is enough because we have the new media to help the opposition parties get their points across to the electorate. Distractionary tactics by the PAP failed this time.
