RSAF Open House 2011: Our Air Force – Defending Our Skies

The Republic of Singapore Air Force will be having their Open House this coming weekend. I was fortunate to get a sneak peak at what to expect at the RSAF Open House 2011.

The biggest attraction of the RSAF Open House has got to be the Aerial Display. There will be 2 Aerial Display daily, 11am and 4:30pm. During the Aerial Display, visitors get to see how the F-15SG and F-16 scramble and intercept “intruders”. There is also a demonstration of how the RSAF integrates with the Army in a mock attack. See how the Chinook carry 2 Light Strike Vehicles and their crew into the battlefield while the AH-64D Apache provide air cover. It would be good to bring along a pair of binoculars.

Visitors can also ballot for tickets to Aircraft Rides onboard C-130 Hercules, Fokker-50 or Chinook helicopter. There will be 3 balloting session each day, 11:40am, 12:30pm and 13:30pm. Visitors can register at the Aircraft Rides Counter near the main stage. The Aircraft Rides are open to Singaporeans and PR only. I got the chance to have a “joy ride” on the Chinook helicopter. It’s a pretty interesting experience. Reminds me of the good old days in the army when we get air lifted during exercise. It’s always a pleasure hitching a ride from the RSAF.

Besides the Aerial Display and Aircraft Rides, there’s also Exhibitions and Static Display. The Static Display is impressive. The main highlights of the Static Display is the F-15SG fighter aircraft. This is the first time that the F-15SG is at the RSAF Open House. There’s also Gulfstream 550 Airborne Early Warning aircraft, S-70B naval helicopter, F-16D Blk 52+ fighter aircraft , AH-64D attack helicopter, Hermes 450 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), AS-332 Super Puma, KC-135 Stratotanker and many more.

Besides planes and helicopters, there’s also the Surface-to-air Python-5 and DERby Radar – Short-Range (SPYDER-SR) ground-based air defence system and the Agile Multiple Beam Radar. Weapon Load Crews from the flying squadrons will also be performing aircraft arming demonstrations on F-15SG and F-16D and AH-64D Apache. Be sure to bring your camera along.
