Auld Lang Syne

It has become a tradition for me to spend the last day of the year looking back at what I’ve done and putting down my thoughts for the year on my blog. Today is no exception.

2011 went pass a bit too quickly. I was looking back at my old blog entries and was kinda shocked that some things that happened mid/early this year felt like they happened just a few months back. It is a constant reminder to me that time wait for no man. I need to treasure time more for I’m no longer young.

I find myself focusing a lot on work this year. 2011 is a big year at my work place. We made great progress this year and set the foundation for even greater things to come. It can be frustrating sometimes but I know end of the day everything is worth it. I’m glad to be part of a great team that is breaking new grounds every day. In fact, I can’t wait to see what challenges 2012 might bring.

And like last year, I still have no idea what I will be doing tonight. Maybe at home infront of my computer with a nice glass of wine. Or alone among the crowd at Marina Bay watching the fireworks. Or somewhere totally unexpected. I’ll let fate decide where it wants to bring me tonight…

Happy 2012 everyone. If you are out partying, party safe. As always, I’ll end the last blog post of the year with the song Auld Lang Syne. Cheers to 2011!

Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis – Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
For of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for of auld lang syne.
We’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup !
And surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for of auld lang syne.
We’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
and pou’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin’ auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for of auld lang syne.
We’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin’ auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for of auld lang syne.
We’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Google Singapore Top Searches of 2011

It is always interesting to see Google’s annual Zeitgeist. From the data, you get a sense of what’s the important and major events happening in the year. Here in Singapore, Groupon is the Fastest Rising Query, above iPad2 and iPhone5.

Tin Pei Ling come in first in the Fastest Rising People chart in Singapore. This is no surprise since 2011 is election year and she is the hot topic before, during and after election. Other politicians like Nicole Seah and George Yeo also made it into the Fastest Rising People chart.

Here’s a quick overview of Singapore’s top searches:

Surprised that mrbrown didn’t make it into the top 10. I guess its because of the tough competition from oversea YouTube creator. If you look at the list, only 2 videos are created locally. And I can’t believe that plastic bottle heartbreak video made it into the top 10. Seriously, that was a badly made viral video. OK, it did went viral, for the wrong reason.

Maybe next year, YouTube can have another top 10 list for top locally created videos so that we can showcase the talents in Singapore.

WAH! Rebecca Black’s Friday is the most watched YouTube video globally?!?! Power.

DK’s Tech prediction for 2011 – Full-time score

Wow, we have reached the end of 2011. That was fast. If you remember, I did some tech predictions for 2011. Here’s the full time score.

2011 will be the year of the Tablets
Spot on. But this is so easy, anyone could have guessed it. But what I didn’t predict is that I would buy a iPad 2 myself (I even took leave and queued for several hours). Oh, and did I say I’m loving my iPad 2?

Windows 7 tablet, tried by failed
Surprisingly, there isn’t much tablets running Windows 7. I was expecting a lot of them. I guess the folks at Microsoft know that Windows 7 isn’t really suitable for tablets. And it is actually good that there isn’t much Windows 7 tablets in the market. It would totally ruin the experience for customers.

Windows 8 would be interesting since it is designed for Touchscreen interface. Looking forward to that, hopefully in 2012.

iPad 2 with front facing camera
Yeap, iPad 2 has a front facing camera. I also predicted that there won’t be a back facing camera which is wrong. I’m surprised that Apple put a back facing camera on iPad 2. The quality of the back facing camera on iPad 2 is so bad that I don’t ever remember using it at all. (other than showing people how bad it is)

Colour e-ink reader from Amazon
Nope, Amazon did not release a colour e-ink reader. Instead, Amazon released the Kindle Fire which is a 7 inch colour touchscreen tablet. And it is selling like wildfire now.

The Kindle Fire is currently not on sale outside US. But that is not stopping people in Singapore from getting their hands on it.

Nokia release smartphone running either Windows Phone 7 or Android
Spot on! Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announced early this year that Nokia will be releasing Windows Phone 7 phone. They launched the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 early this month in Singapore and the reviews are pretty good. Looking forward to more Windows Phone 7 goodness from Nokia in 2012.

Say goodbye to your Symbian and MeeGo phones. Sigh… Poor Nokia N9.

Rise of Windows Phone 7
Instead of going up, Windows Phone 7 market share went down for 2011. The market share went from 4.2% in 2010 to 1.5% in Q3 2011. This is mainly because there isn’t any new Windows Phone 7 phone for the first 3 quarter of 2011. But I still feel that there is great potential in Windows Phone 7. And with Nokia onboard, I think 2012 will be a great year for Windows Phone 7.

Google Chrome OS revive netbook market
Google Chrome OS? What’s that? Haha. Sadly, Google Chrome OS didn’t make much impact. The future of Google Chrome OS looks dim too.

Apple stop using Google Map for iOS
Not happening. Apple is still using Google Map for iOS 5 and there is no sign of them moving away.

No white iPhone 4
Just look around you and you might find someone having a white iPhone 4. Damn, I’m pretty bad at predictions.

Phones with Near Field Communications launched in Singapore but slow pick up in services
I got this right. Nokia did launch a couple of phones with NFC. There are some NFC services like using NFC to book taxi or get more information from a mobile website. But I doubt a lot of people are using them.

Singapore roll out LTE for consumers but takeup rate is slow
I almost got this wrong. M1 rolled out LTE for corporate customers only. SingTel rolled out LTE for consumers on the 2nd last week of 2011. And since it’s only launched for a week, my prediction is correct. (Kelong ah!)

Social Media will play an important role in Singapore General Election
Spot on. Need I say more?

No major phone makers except Apple will release phones using MicroSIM
Let me see. We have Nokia N9, Lumia 800 and Motorola RAZR using MicroSIM. There might be a few more phones out that that uses MicroSIM but I missed out.

So there you have it. Like I said, I’m pretty bad at prediction. Most of the things I predicted didn’t happen. Maybe I should just predict that my predictions for 2012 will be wrong. (See the irony?)
