Nevada approves testing of driverless cars on roads
Nevada has became the first state in US to approve the testing of driverless car on state roads after lobbying from Google.
Self driving cars aren’t ready for consumers yet. It will take at least a couple of years before we start seeing self driving cars being sold. But we do know that Google has been testing self driving cars for quite some time already. In August last year, Google announced that their self driving car has travelled over 160,000 miles autonomously without incident.
Driverless cars will be great for Google Street View. Imagine Google rolling out tons of driverless car to collect the latest Street View images. We’ll have more updated Street View pictures.
Besides Google, other car makers like BMW, Volkswagon, and Audi are in the process of developing their self-driving cars. This new legislation will pave the way for testing of self driving cars.
Companies who wish to test their self driving cars on Nevada roads will need to pay a bond of $1 million to $3 million, depending on the number of cars they want to test. The driverless car must have 2 people inside them at all times and one of them must be able to take control if necessary. All driverless car must be equipped with a black box to record all activities. They will be issued a red license plates so that other road users can identify them.
This is actually an exciting news. I can’t wait to see the day when machine takes over all the driving. We’ll have less (or even zero) accidents on the roads.
