Goodbye Rediffusion

30 April 2012 isn’t just the last day for Google Wave. Here in Singapore, it is also the last day for our first cable radio station, Rediffusion (丽的呼声).

I don’t really have a lot of memories of Rediffusion. I remember my grandmother was a subscriber. Back then, it is just another radio that broadcast program in dialects that I hardly understand. It was only later, through the books, when I learnt about the rich history of Rediffusion.

I guess we only have the Facebook page and some blogs/websites to remind us of its glorious past.

Goodbye Rediffusion. Thank you for the legendary storyteller like Lei Dai Sor. And thank you for entertaining our parents/grandparents.

SharkAid 2012 Concert: “I’m FINished” with shark’s fin

What will you be doing on Labour Day holiday? Come join Shark Savers Singapore in saying “I’m FINished” with shark’s fin at SharkAid 2012 Concert.

SharkAid is a public concert that will feature a star-studded cast of local and international artistes including Tessera, Sylvia Ratonel, Alicia Pan, Eli T, One Degree North and Darryl Yong coming together to raise awareness about shark conservation. Other than radio DJs including Ivy Tan and Yasminne Cheng, athletes such as Laurence (Captain of Singapore’s F1 power boat team), Arren Quek (National swimmer), Aaron Koh (wrestler) and Joan Ang (National fencer) will also be present. Hossan Leong, Shark Savers Singapore’s ambassador will be the host of the concert.

Date: 1 May 2012 (Labour Day)
Venue: Cineleisure
Roadshow: 11am – 4pm
Concert: 5pm – 8pm

Do you know that we humans kill tens of millions of sharks for their fins every year? It’s time to put an end to this. Join me in saying “I’m FINished” with shark’s fin by taking the online pledge.

Goodbye Google Wave

In case you still don’t know, Google is shutting down Google Wave on 30 April 2012.

Google Wave is currently set to read only. Now is a good time for you to login to Google Wave for the last time before it is gone. You can also export individual wave to into a PDF.

Goodbye Google Wave. It is sad that you didn’t have enough opportunity and time to proof your usefulness.

Samsung is now the top mobile phone maker in the world

We knew this day is coming. Samsung is now the top mobile phone maker in the world, overtaking Nokia who has been holding that title for the past 14 years. All hail the new king of mobile phone.

Samsung shipped 92 million mobile phone in the first quarter of 2012 while Nokia come in second place with 83 million mobile phone according to IHS iSuppli.

Apple comes in 3rd with 35 million mobile phone shipped while LG and RIM shipped 14 million and 11 million respectively. Note that the total mobile phones shipped includes featured phones. If we narrow down to just Smartphone, Apple would lead the chart follow by Samsung and Nokia.

Nokia had been the biggest mobile phone maker since 1998 when they took over the spot from Motorola. The result is not a surprise since Nokia is transiting to Windows Phone 7. Question is, will Nokia make a come back and regain the throne from Samsung in the near future?

22nd European Union Film Festival – Trishna

The European Union Film Festival, Singapore 2nd longest running film festival, is back for the 22nd year. This year’s line up is the largest ever with 23 carefully handpicked European films that showcase the rich and cultural diversity of Europe.

This year’s film festival will also include the Singapore premieres of United Kingdom’s Trishna and French romantic comedy La Chance de Ma Vie (Second Chance).

I was invited to watch Trishna during the media preview. Trishna is a 2012 British drama film directed by Michael Winterbottom, starring Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire, Immortals) and Riz Ahmed (The Road to Guantanamo). Based on Thomas Hardy’s 1891 classic novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Trishna tells the story of one woman whose life is destroyed by a combination of love and circumstances in modern day India.

This year, the EU Film Festival is partnering LASALLE College of the Arts’ Puttnam School of Film. The School has curated 14 short films by its alumni, to be screened before selected European films.

The 22nd European Union Film Festival is happening from 11 to 20 May 2012 at Golden Village Vivio City. Ticket sales start today on GV website. For more info, visit EUFF Facebook page.
