Happy Birthday Short Message Service! The first SMS was send 20 years ago on 3 December 1992.
According to Wikipedia, the first SMS message was sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom on 3 December 1992, from Neil Papworth of Sema Group (now Mavenir Systems) using a personal computer to Richard Jarvis of Vodafone using an Orbitel 901 handset. The text of the message was “Merry Christmas.” But it took several years before the 160 character Short Message Service get widespread adoption. 17 billion text messages were send in the year 2000 and that number grew by around 20 times over the next two years.
Today, it is estimated that 7 trillion text messages are sent every year. That’s more than 200,000 per second. But sad to say we are beginning to see the decline in the use of SMS. We are still communicating using short text. Nowadays, instead of sending SMS, we are using applications like WhatsApp, BBM and iMessage on our Smartphone. Who knows, in another 5 to 10 years time, maybe SMS might be completely replaced by all these messaging apps.
