Ilo Ilo

Winner of the prestigious Camera d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Ilo Ilo is set to release in cinema this week. I had the privilege to catch a sneak peek last week and I fell in love with the movie.

Set in Singapore at the beginning of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, Ilo Ilo tell a story about the relationship between the Lim family and their newly arrived maid, Terry. Like many other Filipino woman, she has come to this city in search of a better life. Her presence in the family worsens their already strained relationship.

Jiale, the young and troublesome son, starts to form a unique bond with Teresa, who soon becomes an unspoken part of the family.

Ilo Ilo is a heartwarming movie that all Singaporeans should watch. The director did a great job in bringing the audiences back in time to 1997 with the clever use of props like old payphone, bookshop and cars. I’m impressed by the attention to details in the movie. They even use portrait of Mr and Mrs Ong Teng Cheong in the school assembly hall. These are some of the small details that perhaps the audiences at Cannes Film Festival wouldn’t notice.

Ilo Ilo is set for release in cinemas in Singapore on 29 August 2013.

Lenovo A3000 Android Tablet

Lenovo is famous for their Thinkpads, laptops and desktop. But not a lot of people know that Lenovo also have an Android division that makes smartphones and tablets. And they are doing very well in China and other emerging markets.

Although we won’t be seeing any Lenovo Android smartphones in Singapore anytime soon, the Lenovo Android Tablet will be launching here next month. The Lenovo A3000 tablet will be available during COMEX happening from 5 to 8 September 2013.

The Lenovo A3000 is a 7 inch tablet (1024 x 600) running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It has a Quad-Core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB LP-DDR2 RAM with 16GB internal storage and support up to 32GB microSD card. Weighs just 345 grams and 11mm thick. One interesting thing is that the Lenovo A3000 comes with Dual SIM card slot. Maybe not so useful in Singapore but definitely useful if you travel a lot. There’s no LTE/4G. The A3000 support up to HSPA+.

Honestly speaking, the Lenovo A3000 is just a normal 7 inch Tablet. Nothing fanciful about the specs. Just what you would expect from an Android Tablet nowadays. But perhaps the greatest feature is the price tag. Retailing at S$269 for the upcoming COMEX, Lenovo priced the A3000 at a very attractive range. So attractive that I have to double check to make sure that there isn’t an typo.

If you are looking for a budget Android tablet, the Lenovo A3000 is worth considering.

Steve Ballmer to retire: Microsoft searching for new CEO

Microsoft announced on Friday that CEO Steve Ballmer plans to retire within the next 12 months. Steve Ballmer joined Microsoft as the 30th employee as a business manager. He became the CEO of Microsoft in January 2000, taking over the role from founder Bill Gates.

Microsoft’s Board of Directors has created a special committee to direct the succession process which includes Microsoft founder and chairman of the board Bill Gates. This is no easy job as Microsoft is a huge company with a wide range of product.

Despite some of the criticism, I think we will all miss Steve Ballmer. It’s difficult to find another CEO of a big company that provide us with so much comedy materials. In the meantime, let’s Bing for a new Microsoft CEO.
