DBS Marina Regatta 2013 last weekend attracted close to 140 dragon boating teams from around the region including top national teams from Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. More than twice the number of teams participated in this year’s DBS International Premier race categories and the DBS Tertiary race categories compared to the previous year. This is also the first time that local tertiary dragon boaters competed with their peers from the region on an international race platform in the waters of Singapore.

This year, the Regatta also saw female participation increase to close to 700 athletes compared to over 400 last year. The sport has also gained traction among corporations, with 11 companies fielding dragon boating teams for the first time.

Besides Dragon Boat Races, more than 100 cosplayers and 15 percussion groups kept spectators entertained at the Regatta. Festival-goers also had the opportunity to interact with close to 30 social enterprises, who provided refreshments, entertainment and the sale of merchandise at the DBS Marina Regatta. In all, the event attracted a crowd of over 12,000 during the Dragon Boat Races.

Part 2 of the DBS Marina Regatta 2013 will be happening this coming long weekend (24 and 25 May 2013). More than 1,000 people will have the opportunity to try out dragon boating, kayaking and sailing free of charge during the Bay Festival. Other exciting activities include rousing drum competitions and performances by popular local artistes such as Electrico, Jack & Rai, Jessica Soo and The Ferdinands.

Yahoo announced a major revamp of its popular photo sharing site Flickr recently. First and foremost, Flickr Pro account has been dropped. Instead of the 200 photos limit for free account, everyone get 1TB storage space.

This is a great move. In the past, I’ve been telling my friends that Flickr is useless if you don’t get the Flickr Pro account. It is very easy to reach 200 photos. The new scheme means that users can upload a lot more photos without the need to pay. Instead, Flickr is earning money via advertisements on the page. Users who need more space can sign up for doublr service priced at $499.99 a year which gives users additional 1TB of extra space.

Users can also pay $49.99 per year to get rid of advertisement on their Flickr page.

The user interface has also been refreshed. Completely. And like most major UI changes, you’ll hear a lot of people complaining. For me, I think it wasn’t that bad. I kinda like the new Photostream. But I don’t really like the interface that shows my contact’s photos.

So what do you think about the new Flickr?

Canon recently released the World’s First Telephoto Zoom Lens Equipped with an Internal Extender. The top tiered high performance EF200-400MM F4L IS USM Extender 1.4X lens supports the advanced needs of professionals to fully capture a variety of scenes using just one versatile high-performance zoom lens.

This latest entry into Canon’s famous top-of-the-line L-series lenses is the first of its kind to be equipped with an internal 1.4x extender. With this extender, the 200-400mm lens is able to extend its zoom to an impressive 200-560mm range, while still providing the superb image quality that L-series lenses are known for. This makes it very effective for a wide variety of shooting situations and saving photographers from carrying multiple telephoto lenses and the hassle of switching lenses.

The EF200-400MM F4L IS USM Extender 1.4X incorporates a new optical design that makes use of a fluorite lens and four UD (ultra-low dispersion) lens elements which effectively corrects colour aberrations across the entire zoom range. This results in high-resolution, high-contrast images comparable to those taken by large-diameter super-telephoto prime lenses.

The EF200-400MM F4L IS USM Extender 1.4X lens will be available end May at authorised Canon dealers with a recommended retail price of S$16,599.

Singaporean director Anthony Chen’s film, ILO ILO 爸妈不在家, received a 15-minute standing ovation when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. It is also in the running for the Caméra d’Or (given to the best first feature in the Official Selection, the Director’s Fortnight or International Critics’ Week).

Set in Singapore, ILO ILO chronicles the relationship between a family of three and their newly arrived Filipino maid, Teresa, who has come like many other Filipino women in search of a better life. The entire family needs to adapt to the presence of this stranger, which further threatens their already strained relationship. Still, Teresa and Jiale, the young and troublesome boy she cares for, soon form a bond. Their unique connection continues to develop and soon she becomes an unspoken part of the family.
