Instagram said that they are working on an Android App. So when I saw the Instagram for Android App on the Android Marketplace on 4 February 2012, I immediately download it to try it out.

But it’s a fake.

Firstly, the interface looks ugly. I would expect Instagram to do a better job. And there isn’t a sign up or login screen. Just a Popular and Share button. And after taking a photo, a popup says that I must give the App a 5 Star rating to get the filters. That’s when my alarm start ringing. Why would Instagram do such an unethical thing to get 5 star review? And that is most likely against Google’s Terms and Conditions. The App even tried to post on my Facebook wall to tell my Facebook friends about the App. This can’t be the real Instagram App.

I’m embarrassed to say that the App managed to fool me for a while. It looks quite real to me. If it has a login screen, I’ll most likely login with my Instagram userid/password. I can’t believe I fell for it. Icon and everything looks real. Developer website is correct on Android Marketplace. Everything looks proper except the screenshots are clearly from iPhone. (Damn! I should have spotted that, but I didn’t) But luckily for us, the app didn’t seem to be doing anything malicious. If you have installed the application, do delete it ASAP. Let’s hope Google remove it from Android Marketplace soon. I wonder how many people downloaded it.

If a tech savvy person like me will fall for this fake app, I wonder what will happen to those who are not tech savvy.

Seriously Google, unmoderated Android Marketplace is not a good idea.

I wonder if Apple will take legal action against the Taiwanese company. Apple is known to send cease and desist letters to companies making Steve Job toys. But they might not have a case here. We’ll see.

Here is another interesting project on Kickstarter. A iPhone 4/4S harness that strap your iPhone close to your chest to capture your Personal Point Of View on video. It’s call the Miveu.

The Miveu is not just a iPhone strap. It also has a wide angle len so that you can capture broader perspective. The iPhone is protected in a ruggedized case. Miveu is not waterproof by itself. But the makers will include three protective water resistant skins for wet conditions.

Compare this with other POV camera like GoPro, the Miveu is a lot cheaper if you already have a iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. And since it is recorded on your iPhone, you can straight away edit the video and share it on your social network after recording.

The Miveu is great for recording your POV when doing sports like cycling or skateboarding. Or when you are on a roller coaster or Go Karting. You can even hold a fake gun infront of the Miveu and do a First Person Shooter video.

And for those who want to live stream your daily life, Miveu is a great solution.

OK, you might look a little silly when wearing the Miveu. But the POV videos you can get from the Miveu will make it all worthwhile.

The Miveu is currently on Kickstarter. Pledge $70 (plus $35 for international shipping) and you will get a Miveu if the funding is successful.

I’m always fascinated by pictures of the edge of the space taken using weather balloons. It is not really difficult to do this. Few weeks ago, 2 teens from Canada send a Legoman to the edge of space.

The 2 teens spent $400 on materials and four months on the project. The weather balloon is estimated to have reached 24km above sea level. The journey took 97 minutes and the camera landed 122km away from its initial launch site. They managed to recover the camera and got these amazing photos.

How I wish I could do something like this one day. But it’s not really possible to do it in Singapore as the camera will most likely land somewhere in the sea or another country.

OK, if you are visiting US soon, becareful of what you post on Twitter. (I guess the same applies to Facebook, Blog and other social network) Cause the over paranoid Department of Homeland Security are monitoring the social network for “potential threats” and I guess they don’t really know how Social Media works.

Leigh Van Bryan and his friend Emily Bunting were handcuffed and kept under armed guard in a cell with Mexican drug dealers for 12 hours after landing in Los Angeles. The Department of Homeland Security flagged him as a potential threat after discovering 2 tweets from him prior to his visit to US. They were denied entry and put on a flight back to UK the next day.

You might be wondering, what dangerous stuff did he tweet before his journey. Well, the tweets are:

Free this week, for quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America?

3 weeks today, we’re totally in LA pissing people off on Hollywood Blvd and diggin’ Marilyn Monroe up!

And I’m not even surprised that someone at Department of Homeland Security took those tweet seriously. This is not the first time we are seeing this and this will not be the last time we are going to see this. In 2010, a UK guy was fined £1,000 by magistrates court for Tweeting “Crap! Robin Hood airport is closed. You’ve got a week and a bit to get your shit together otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high!!”

I seriously think that all these Government agencies should employ people who understand how social media works to monitor the social networks. Actually, you don’t really need social media savvy people. You just need people with common sense. A terrorist will not tweet about his plan to destroy a country and digging someone’s grave openly in the public.

Use your brains people…..

And you know what’s the most funny thing about this entire incident? The Federal agents searching the guy’s suitcase to look for spades and shovels. Dudes, Marilyn Monroe was interred in a crypt at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery. There is nothing to dig.

The files on MegaUpload servers might be deleted even before the extradition hearing of MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom begin.

According to the US Attorney’s Office leading the prosecution, the companies hosting Megaupload data might begin deleting data on 2nd February 2012. The prosecution have searched the servers and copied selected files required for the case. They did not take the server into custody and the servers are still with the hosting companies Carpathia and Cogent.

And since MegaUpload’s assets were frozen by the US Department of Justice, they are unable to pay the hosting companies. As a result, the hosting companies have the rights to delete the data.

This seems to be bad news for the defendants. MegaUpload need to prove to the court that there are legitimate use case for their service and majority of the files on MegaUpload are legal. With the files deleted, it is going to be difficult for the lawyer to prove their case.

And this also mean bad news for those with legitimate files on MegaUpload. Looks like you can kiss your files goodbye. Hope you guys have backups.
