Nokia 3310 reborn

Everyone is talking about the re-launched Nokia 3310. After all, it is one of Nokia’s most iconic phone.

Nokia3310

The new Nokia 3310 takes the iconic silhouette of the original Nokia 3310 which was released in 2000. It has a redesigned user interface, 2.4 inch QVGA colour screen, Micro USB port for charging and 3.5mm earphone jack. Oh, there’s also a 2 Megapixel camera with LED flash.

At 49 Euros, maybe it will be a big hit in developing countries. To me, it is just a publicity stunt. A stunt to tell the whole world that Nokia is back. And yes, it did captured everyone’s attention with this publicity stunt.

Oh and to be precise, Nokia is not really back. The new Nokia 3310 (together with the Android Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6) is manufactured by HMD Global which bought the rights to use the “Nokia” brand until 2024.

While everyone is excited about the new Nokia 3310, I’m more interested in seeing Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. We’ve been waiting for the longest time to see how a Nokia phone running Android will perform. Let’s hope they don’t disappoint us.

PS: If you are thinking of getting the new Nokia 3310 in Singapore, don’t bother. The new Nokia 3310 is using 2G network. Singapore will be turning off 2G network from 1st April 2017. IMDA prohibits the sale of 2G devices in Singapore. Even if you can get your hands on it, you won’t be able to make any phone calls or SMS. Well, at least you still can play Snake.

Happy 9th birthday DKSG

Oh hey! Today is the 9th year that I’ve been blogging on this domain. Happy Birthday DKSG.

9thBirthday

I know I’ve been blogging less lately. Been trying to get the momentum back.

PS: I got a warning message last month saying that I’m reaching my 2GB Gmail quota. Which means it took me 8 years and 11 months to fill up 2GB worth of emails. OK lah. I don’t usually get large emails anyway.

Are you sure you want to use WhatsApp Status?

WhatsApp just launched a new feature called WhatsApp Status. In short, it is just like Instagram Stories. Or should I say Snapchat since Instagram Stories is a copy of Snapchat.

WhatsAppStatus

When Facebook added Instagram Stories on Instagram, I can totally see the reason why. It’s competing with Snapchat for the “Instant video and photo that will be gone after 24 hours” space. And I must say that it is a smart move for Facebook to put that feature on Instagram. It really took away some users from Snapchat.

But I don’t understand why Facebook added the same feature to WhatsApp. Isn’t Instagram Stories enough? Why create another identical service to compete with Snapchat and their own Instagram Stories?

Do we really need another platform for posting videos and photos that will be gone within 24 hours?

Let’s just say we really need another platform to do it, my biggest question is: Are you sure you want to use WhatsApp Status?

Just think about it. WhatsApp Status is shared with everyone in your contacts. Now go through your contact list. You’ll most likely have clients, bosses, colleagues, acquaintances etc in your contact list. Do you really want to share your WhatsApp Status with them?

WhatsApp provide you a privacy settings to block some people in your contact list from seeing your WhatsApp status. You can always block those that you don’t want to share your WhatsApp Status before you start using. Cool right? Not really.

You’ll need to remember to update privacy settings whenever you add a new person to your address book. What if you forgot to block a new client on WhatsApp Status after adding his number to your contact list? Are you sure you want to go through that trouble?

You might say that Snapchat and Instagram Stories also have similar problems. Yes. But at least Snapchat and Instagram make it easier to control your privacy settings and doesn’t add new followers whenever you add a new mobile number in your contact list. Your contact list is not your social network.

So are you really really sure you want to use WhatsApp Status?

Well, you can still use WhatsApp Status and be mindful that your bosses, colleagues and clients might be watching. Or you can just stick with Snapchat/Instagram Stories and save yourself the trouble.

KDF Millennium Ride 2017

78 EPIC Cylist riders will endure 1,000km over 4 days to raise funds for the KDF Millennium Ride 2017. They will cycle from Malaysia to Singapore for this good cause on 3 – 6 March 2017.

KDF

The yearly affair is organised by EPIC Cyclist, a local cycling group, and recognised to be one of the most mentally and physically challenging rides in the region. Participants are expected to withstand at least 9 hours of non-stop cycling to cover 250km each day through various terrains and battle unpredictable weather conditions.

The toughest challenge this year is covering 470km in the first two days and accumulating a total incline gain that is above the height of Mount Everest. EPIC Cyclist hopes to raise at least $300,000 this year. All proceeds from the donations will be channelled to needy kidney patients under the care of Kidney Dialysis Foundation.
