HTC One series

2011 was a confusing year for HTC fans. The company made great phones but they keep pushing out phones after phones with just minor updates to the previous model. I think the effects of this compulsive adding of new phones is reflected during their disappointing fourth-quarter earnings. Early this year, HTC UK chief Phil Roberson said the company will return to a strategy of launching a limited number of high-spec devices in 2012. In another word, HTC need a Hero phone. (And I’m not referring to the HTC Hero phone which was launched in 2009)

And I guess this is the One. The HTC One. Actually, there are 3 HTC One. HTC One S, HTC One X and HTC One V. Hmmm….

The HTC One S is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with up to 1.5GHz dual-core CPU. It has a 4.3-inch screen crafted from contoured Corning Gorilla Glass. The HTC One S is HTC’s thinnest phone yet with just 7.9mm thick.

The HTC One X is a 4.7 inch Android phone with 720p HD screen crafted from contoured Corning Gorilla Glass. It features a beautifully crafted polycarbonate unibody that has the ruggedness of metal but is super lightweight. HTC One X uses the latest NVIDA Tegra 3 Mobile Processor for clear graphics, faster applications and longer battery life. It includes a 1.5GHz Super 4-PLUS-1 quad-core with an integrated fifth Battery Saver Core and a high-performance 12-Core NVIDIA GPU. The HTC One X is HSDPA+ but it will also be available in LTE in selected market.

The HTC One V features a simple, iconic aluminium unibody design similar to the HTC Legend. It’s 3.7-inch screen is the smallest screen in the HTC One Series. The HTC One V runs on a Single core 1GHz processor.

All the 3 phones in the HTC One Series will be running the new HTC Sense 4 and integration of Beats By Dr. Dre Audio. The HTC One series will begin shipping in April. No pricing is available yet at the moment.

Oh, one more thing. HTC has integrated Dropbox into HTC Sense 4 and is giving all HTC One customer 25GB of free Dropbox space for 2 years. Sweet.

Nokia Lumia 900 non LTE version

Nokia today announced at Mobile World Congress 2012 the Nokia Lumia 900. HOLD ON! Didn’t they announced the Lumia 900 during Consumer Electronics Show 2012?

Well, the Nokia Lumia 900 that was announced in CES2012 has LTE and is exclusive to AT&T. This Lumia 900 that Nokia announced at MWC2012 is a DC-HSPA version (up to 42Mbps) and is available worldwide. I have no idea why Nokia didn’t give it another name.

But name aside, the Nokia Lumia 900 is a beauty. It is basically a upsized Nokia Lumia 800. The Nokia Lumia 900 runs on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. It has a 4.3 inch WVGA (800×480) ClearBlack AMOLED display with a 1.4 GHz Single Core Snapdragon processor. 8 Megapixel rear facing camera and a 1 Megapixel front facing camera. Just in time for the Skype on Windows Phone 7.

It is no surprise that Nokia is releasing the non LTE version of Nokia Lumia 900 in rest of the world. Most countries aren’t LTE ready and it would make more sense to buy a HSDPA+ version instead.

The Nokia Lumia 900 (Non LTE version) will be shipping in Q2 2012.

Skype now available on Windows Phone 7, FINALLY

Skype is now available on Windows Phone 7. FINALLY! What took Microsoft and Skype so long?

Note that this is just a Beta version of Skype and is available to Windows Phone 7.5 users. And it would be good if your Windows Phone 7 has a front facing camera. Users can download directly from their Windows Phone or at the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace.

I tried the Skype Beta on the Nokia Lumia 800. Since there’s no front facing camera, the other party can only see view from my rear facing camera. Everything works pretty alright. But a little buggy. Well, there’s a reason why it is still in beta.

The full version will be made available in April. Let’s hope they integrate Skype into the phone just like Facebook and Twitter.

Sony announced Xperia P and Xperia U

It’s going to take a while to get used to saying “Sony Xperia” instead of “Sony Ericsson Xperia”. In case you still don’t know, Sony and Ericsson have gone separate ways after ten years of its Sony Ericsson joint venture in the mobile phone market. Sony is taking full control of the mobile phone business while Ericsson concentrate on its other business.

Sony Mobile announced its first Xperia phone after the breakup during CES2012. The Sony Xperia S is a 4.3 inch Android phone with a 1.5GHz CPU and a 12 megapixel camera. Sony Mobile announced at MWC 2012 the Xperia S will start shipping globally now. Which means it’s a matter of weeks before we see it in Singapore. *Fingers crossed*

Sony Mobile also unveiled 2 new phone under the Xperia NXT series – Xperia P and Xperia U.

The Sony Xperia P is a 4 inch Android phone with a 1GHz CPU, 8 Megapixel camera in a full aluminium unibody design. It is the first Xperia phone to use WhiteMagic display technology from Sony. WhiteMagic technology is said to deliver the brightest viewing experience. Smart power efficiency automatically adjust the screen brightness to the surroundings to conserve battery life.

The Sony Xperia U is a 3.5 inch Android phone with a 1GHz CPU and 5 Megapixel camera.

Both Xperia P and Xperia U will be launched globally in the second quarter of this year.
