21st European Union Film Festival – Of Gods and Men

I was invited to the European Union Film Festival’s Blogger Movie Night held at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia. This is my 3rd year attending the EU Film Festival. This year, we previewed a film from France titled Des hommes et des dieux (Of Gods and Men), Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

Of Gods and Men tells the true story of a monastery under threat from the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria during the 1996 Algerian Civil War. A group of nine Trappist monks stationed at the monastery of Tibhirine have to decide whether to leave or stay.
It is an interesting film although the pace is rather slow for my liking. But I must say that I enjoyed the story. I particularly like the part where the monk quoted the Koran to the terrorist and convinced them to leave peacefully.
The EU Film Festival is the 2nd longest running Film Festival in Singapore. The Festival will showcase 18 film from different part of Europe this year, including Team Building (Hungary), Mount St. Elias (Austria) and Blind Loves (Slovak).

The EU Film Festival is partnering New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia to screen some of its students’ best short film before the selected feature film. This provides the students a rare opportunity to showcase thier work next to internationally acclaimed European films.
The films are scheduled for single screenings only, and tickets will go on sale on 21 Apr 2011 at Golden Village VivoCity and GV website. For film schedule and other details, visit www.euff.sg or join the EUFF Facebook Page
