Time to move beyond Earth Hour

OK, Earth Hour is over. (at least here in Singapore)
Here is something that I can never understand. Why do building management bother to get someone to switch on the building lights at 9:30pm? Why not just leave them turned off for the entire night? Does it matter if you leave the lights switched off beyond Earth Hour? Why stop at Earth Hour? Why not switch off the lights once a month or even once a week even if it is not Earth Hour?
I hate to say this but Earth Hour is just for show. Switching off the lights for just one hour a year doesn’t help much. The amount of carbon emission from all the marketing activities behind Earth Hour most likely overwrite the amount saved from switching off non-essential lights for one hour.
Let’s face it. Earth Hour is not about saving the planet. Earth Hour is just an awareness campaign. If they want to save the planets, they will most likely do much more by getting people to turn off their aircon and stop driving for that one hour.
It is great that the Earth Hour organizers managed to get almost all major companies around the world to take part. But it is time to move beyond that hour. We have enough awareness. Everyone knows the need to take action to stop climate change. But are we doing anything about it?
