Canon joins the mirrorless battle with EOS M

Canon finally joins the mirrorless battle with the announcement of the Canon EOS M today.

The Canon EOS M is the smallest camera in the EOS system. The EOS M body weighs just 265 grams and measures 10.86 x 6.65 x 3.23 cm in size. It has a 18.1 megapixel 22.3 x 14.9mm APS-C sized CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 image processor. The 3 inch Clear View II touch panel is capable of 1.04 megapixel bright display and reduced reflection. The capacitive touch panel is capable of multi touch operation for AF selection, touch shutter and menu selection. Comes with anti-smudge coating for reduced fingerprints.

High ISO sensitivity of up to 12800 (expandable to 25600) allows the EOS M to handle low light situation well. You might want to take note that the EOS M does not come with built in flash. But there’s a hotshoe for external flash. If you need flash, Canon also release a compact and lightweight flashgun, the Speedlite 90EX.

The Canon EOS M is also capable of recording full HD video. Similar to the recently launched Canon 650D, the EOS M is equipped with a Movie Servo AF which enable continuous auto focusing during video recording.
Together with the launch of the EOS M today, Canon also announced a range of accessories for this new camera. The EF-M 18-55mm f3.5/5.6 IS STM and the EF-M 22mm f/2.0 STM lenses are specially designed for the EOS M.

But perhaps the most exciting accessory is the Mount Adapter EF-EOS M which allows you to use all your EF and EF-S lenses on the Canon EOS M. This is great for those who are already in the Canon Ecosystem. All functions of the EF/EF-S lenses can be use and it provide you with similar angle of view with the EOS APS-C cameras.

You might be wondering, how is this small camera body able to take the weight of those heavy lenses. Well, the Canon EOS M has a high strength, highly rigid frame structure. Front base is made of magnesium while the back plate is stainless steel.

The Canon EOS M comes in Black, White, Red and Silver colour and will be available in Singapore from early October. We don’t have the Singapore pricing yet but according to some US website, the EOS M and 22mm STM lens kit will cost US$799.99.
