Using Facebook Messenger with just a name and phone number

Facebook is rolling out a update for Facebook Messenger app on Android that allow users to create a Messenger account with just your name and phone number. No need to login to your Facebook account. You can send message to people in your mobile contacts.
The rollout is currently focusing on Australia, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Venezuela. Rest of the world will get it shortly. iOS users will also be getting this but at a later date.

This is actually an interesting move. But I’ve no idea who is Facebook trying to target. Most people already have a Facebook account. And most people already have WhatsApp. So why would anyone need this new feature on Facebook Messenger?
