Belkin WeMo Switch and WeMo Motion

Home automation is going to be something big in the near future. Imagine the ability to turn on the electric water kettle before you reach home so that you can brew a cup of tea when you reach home. Or check if you remember to turn off the electricity to the iron when you are in the office.
It’s not going to be cheap to wire up your entire home. But thanks to Belkin WeMo, you can have simple home automation at low cost.
The Belkin WeMo consist of 2 initial products, the WeMo Switch and the WeMo Motion. Both products work closely with the free WeMo iOS app to create a highly scalable and customizable home control system.
Belkin WeMo Switch
The WeMo Switch is a small device that plugs directly into any electrical outlet and serves as the main building block for WeMo. Once the Switch is connected to the home Wi-Fi network, any device plugged into it can then be turned on or off from anywhere with the WeMo app. The app also enables users to put devices on a timed schedule, so devices will turn on or off at pre-set times.
Belkin WeMo Switch + Motion
The WeMo Switch + Motion adds a sensor that reads motion within 10 feet and will turn on or off anything plugged into the switch based on motion. The WeMo app tells any device plugged into the corresponding WeMo Switch what to do when motion is sensed. The app also allows users to create rules or schedules based on customized intervals.
WeMo also features integration with If This Than That (IFTTT), an online service that allows users to create tasks combining different Internet-based services from one platform. Through the WeMo channel on IFTTT, users can use a WeMo Switch or Motion to trigger a variety of services, including email, weather, phone calls, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
The Belkin WeMo Switch cost S$109 and WeMo Switch + Motion cost S$199 and will be available in Singapore at the end of January 2013.

  1. The WeMo Light Switch replaces an existing light switch and connects into your home’s existing electrical wiring. Once in place, you can turn a full bank of lights on and off from anywhere, put them on a schedule, or use other WeMo or online triggers to control them through a smartphone or tablet. The WeMo Light Switch is controlled via the same free WeMo app as the WeMo Switch and Motion, conveniently keeping track of all of your WeMo-enabled devices from one app.
