4.6 million Snapchat accounts hacked

Snapchat got hacked on New Year Eve and more than 4.6 million users name and phone numbers were downloaded. The data was posted online with the last 2 digits of the phone number removed.
Now don’t worry. Most of the affected accounts are from America. So if your mobile number is outside America, you are most likely safe. If you are worried, you can use this website to check if your Snapchat account is affected.
An Australian company called Gibson Security posted a warning to Snapchat about the possibility of an attack in August 2013 and released the details on Christmas Day. Snapchat claimed in a blog post that they have implemented various safeguards to make it more difficult to do.
Well, seems like it wasn’t difficult enough.
The hackers said that they wanted to raise the public awareness around the issue, and also put public pressure on Snapchat to get the exploit fixed.
Actually, only the username and the mobile number tied to the username is exposed in this hack. Your chat log and photos that you send are safe.
For most people, it is not really a big deal. And if my memory served me correct, this is not the first time a website get “hacked” in this manner. Oh well.
