Google’s Year in Search 2014

Every year, Google will release a list of the fastest raising search term for the year. They used to call it The Google Zeitgeist but surprisingly this year they are just calling it Year in Search. But it is still interesting to see what people are searching as it reflects on the major events for the year.
The top trending search item in Singapore is the mysterious disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight 370. Searches for “MH370” is five times higher than the top trending local news search, “PSI Singapore”. Other headlines that grabbed attention this year include the referendum in Scotland, the announcement of the 2014 Budget and the opening of Singapore’s new Sports Hub.
News of the Ebola outbreak in parts of West Africa and the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge also got Singaporeans into research mode, with Singaporeans not just looking for the latest news, but digging into the topics with searches for “What is ALS” and “What is Ebola” at #1 and #2 on the “What is…” list.
